The Dot

Description:

For this project we used a coffee filter, watercolor, crayons, washable markers, and permanent markers. The goal of this project was to create a dot full of colors. We used various types of materials to experiment with what they would do when mixed with other materials. We noticed how the washable markers blended, but crayons did not blend. By using various materials, we were able to create a piece of art unique to us.

Extension:

An extension for this art project would be to create a science chromatography experiment. The study of separating different materials with a solution is called chromatography. Teacher should first talk about chromatography and why scientists study chromatography. Then the teacher asks students to hypnotize what they think is going to happen when crayons interacts with water, when washable markers interact with water, and when permanent markers interact with water. As a closing, the teacher could ask students what they learned about mixing various materials and the reactions they saw.
